Pilot projects

Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research has funded five pilot projects since 1998 with the objective of developing new search and learning strategies using modern media and the means offered by information and communications technology. These new search and learning strategies will help hasten the transition from traditional forms of learning and studying to self-directed learning.

The objective of these pilot projects is to collaborate closely with companies, universities and non-university research institutes, including them in the research process right from the start, in order to ensure that innovation potential of relevance to the market can be identified early in the development process. Pilot projects are to bring together knowledge, bundle energies and serve as "pace-makers" in important, application-relevant fields of research. As a result, translating project findings into products, processes and/or services is an integral part of the jointly organized innovation process.
