MedicDAT: Media interface for content-based connection of scientific Documents, Abstracts and Text books
Lead manager: University Medical Centre of the University of Regensburg, 6 sub-projects
Funding: 0 4.76 million
Project ends December 31, 2004.
Drawing on electronic media used in the medical field, the MedicDAT project aims to merge and interlink the content of all types of information that is available in electronic form. This project brings together and links content from hospital communication systems, computer applications used in medical practices, knowledge-based systems, medical databases, literature services and other electronic information media together, without regard to the producer. MedicDAT can, for example, be accessed from a university medical centre's communication system and can branch to textbook content on a content-sensitive basis.
By linking context in the information process, MedicDAT makes it possible to control the flood of information, accelerate access to needed specialist information and evaluate search results. A standardized user interface is used to display the information gathered from various databases and applications.
The University Medical Centre of the University of Regensburg is in charge of overseeing the MedicDAT project which also involves partners from the private sector. It is planned to continue this cooperation even after the project has ended. This work will then be done by a MedicDAT company that will be set up by the parties involved.
By then, MedicDAT will have become the structural basis for a medical information network that is not bound to one location or limited in its content. It will be broadly used in the initial and continuing vocational training field, the research sector, and health care field at both national and international level.
