BIBB special conference: Inter-Company Vocational Training Facilities as Skill Centres - New prospects through change

- Forum for experts from theory and practice -

Inter-company vocational training facilities (IVTF) that want to continue serving as an "extended workbench for companies that provide vocational training" in the future must keep pace with developments in the initial and continuing vocational training field - and develop themselves into skill centres! The new concept to promote and develop IVTFs into skill centres which the Federal Ministry of Education and Research released in July 2001 and the new funding criteria which the Federal Institute for Vocational Training ("BIBB") developed on the basis of this concept make it clear what is expected: Besides pursuing their core mission - conducting inter-company vocational training and further and continuing training - inter-company vocational training facilities in their role as skill centres are to be customer-oriented education service providers in the future. As skill centres, IVTFs are, among other things, to be better able to respond to the operational needs of small and medium-sized enterprises, foster innovation, offer problem-solving training services and implement them in ways that are practice-oriented and geared to the particular company. The platform for this: State-of-the-art equipment, training personnel with extensive knowledge of their subject and courses with high technical standards.

How can these requirements be realized in practice? What difficulties have to be overcome, what problems have to be solved and what conditions have to exist in order for these requirements to be met?

Vocational training experts from practice and theory will be on hand to discuss these issues at the special conference on

Inter-Company Vocational Training Facilities as Skill Centres
- New prospects through change -
Oldenburg, Germany, May 5 - 6, 2004

The conference is being organized by BIBB - which has examined and provided flanking support for the conditions and possibilities for transforming inter-company vocational training facilities into skill centres both in the course of a research project and through its funding and provision of flanking research support for seven pilot projects - and by the Federal Technology Centre for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in Oldenburg.

During the two days of the conference, discussion will revolve around what 100 vocational training centres cited in a written survey conducted by BIBB as being currently the most important issues.
These topics - taken straight from everyday practice - will be the focus of six workshops during the conference:

  • Implementing knowledge management successfully. Examples from actual practice
  • Employment-oriented training and multimedia
  • Steps toward a marketing concept for inter-company vocational training facilities
  • Early recognition of training needs as a responsibility of customer-oriented skill centres
  • Contractual aspects of collaborative activities
  • New demands on training personnel and management

Speakers from actual practice, who have been or are currently involved in the concrete implementation of these areas of activity will discuss their case examples with the some 300 experts from the theoretical and practical fields attending the conference. Together they will work on developing approaches to solutions.

The question "Elite training for small and medium-sized enterprises. A business segment for skill centres?" will be the subject of a panel discussion with the President of BIBB, Professor Helmut Pütz, and representatives from Chambers for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (crafts' chambers) and private companies.
