Learning what colour is - With the help of BIBB's multimedia learning programme!

Colour is everything for designers of digital and print media! Whether it be at an advertising or multimedia agency, at a company that produces online or offline media, in printing works, publishing houses or repro companies -"colour" rules the work process from start to finish. When customers award contracts they expect technical competence and advice on designing the colours of their products - and the technical process, from preparing and processing data all the way to realizing the particular media product, requires a comprehensive knowledge of everything that involves seeing, evaluating and producing colours. The Farbenlehre (Chromatics) learning programme developed by Germany's Federal Institute for Vocational Training ("BIBB") offers multimedia-based access to the knowledge needed for this. The Farbenlehre programme also incorporates subject matter covered by vocational schools. Using the Farbenlehre CD-ROM, trainees in the graphics, print and design field can learn everything worth knowing about the subject of colour and, in the process, supplement their own training.

With a total of 31 modules, this interactive learning programme offers users the means to familiarize themselves with the subject of colour on a step-by-step basis in structured learning sequences and to check their progress using tests of their knowledge.

Step 1: Physiology

This segment explains:

  • Light, how it occurs and what colour is (Light and Colour),
  • How the eye perceives colour (Seeing Colour),
  • Colour's effects (Colour Perception) and
  • How colours appear to change, depending upon the light conditions (Lighting and Surroundings).

Step 2: Colour models

General laws and the subjective perception of colours are explained using the

  • Physical and technical model (Colour Mixing) and the
  • Perception-oriented model (Subjective Impressions of Colour).

Step 3: Chromatometry

This segment introduces the individual to the objective measurement of colour.

Step 4: Media production

This last segment focuses on practical questions as illustrated by a concrete customer order. Step 4 deals with the topics:

  • Advising customers
  • Desktop publishing
  • Lithography and layout
  • Printing process

Information regarding the occupation of "designer of digital and print media" and a technical glossary that explains terms such as "automatism" and "achromatic point" round out the Farbenlehre learning programme.
