Simulation games for vocational education and training - BIBB updates simulation game catalogue

Simulation games are particularly well suited to simulating the workday in a future occupation during initial and continuing vocational education and training. They provide young people and adults with the opportunity to get acquainted with the important activities of their future occupation and the chance to practice the "real thing" in the course of their training. The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has been publishing the multimedia guide (manual with CD-ROM) "Planspiele in der beruflichen Bildung" (Simulation games in vocational education and training) since 2000, issuing updated editions on a yearly basis. The demand for each new edition has been so great that stocks have typically been exhausted within a few months of the publication's release. The BIBB hopes to accommodate the great interest in this training medium with a fourth, expanded edition that is being prepared for publication in early 2005.

Experience has shown that the catalogue of simulation games included in the publication is the subject of the most demand. The catalogue currently lists around 450 German-language simulation games. It also describes potential applications and presents playable demo-versions of various offerings. The updated new edition of the publication will therefore not only include a revised version of the list of simulation games, but reflect the latest developments and trends in the simulation game market as well.

In order to ensure that the catalogue presents the most comprehensive survey of the German-language simulation game supply possible, we are requesting

  • producers of simulation games,
  • publishers of simulation games,
  • organizers of simulation game competitions, and providers of initial and further education and training for simulation game trainers

to present information about their products and programmes in the BIBB's multimedia guide "Planspiele in der beruflichen Bildung".

Information can be entered directly into the "BIBB-Planspielforum" (Simulation Game Forum) at http://www.vernetzt-denken.de/ (Click on "BIBB-Planspielforum" and then on "BIBB-Planspielkatalog:
Neuaufnahmen").

The "BIBB-Planspielforum" supplements the "Planspiele in der beruflichen Bildung" manual and CD-ROM by providing information on recent news in the simulation game field. The forum is open to anyone who is interested in the medium of the simulation game. In addition to offering on-line communication, it presents new simulation game ideas, information for trainers and game designers, as well as information about current events. The forum also provides suppliers the opportunity to present themselves.

The updated simulation game catalogue will be released as part of the new edition of the BIBB publication "Planspiele in der beruflichen Bildung" (manual with CD-ROM) in early 2005.
