Multimedia in Vocational Education and Training: BIBB makes Information and Learning System available

The use of computers in initial and continuing vocational education and training is taken for granted these days, but the many ways that they can be appropriately used have to be learned - and taught. When is the use of computer-based learning programs in vocational education and training appropriate? How do you evaluate the quality of a learning program? What does "blended learning" mean? How about "edutainment" or "hypertext"? Educators involved in initial and continuing vocational education and training have to answer these, and many other questions if they are to integrate computer work into their instructional activity rationally. For this reason BIBB, the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, has tapped its many years of experience with the development of multimedia educational tools to assemble a brief, easily intelligible information and learning system." The Internet publication "Lehren und lernen mit Multimedia in der beruflichen Bildung. Projektbeispiele des Bundesinstituts für Berufsbildung" [Teaching and Learning with Multimedia in Vocational Education and Training. Project Examples of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training] is available at no cost at www.ausbilderfoerderung.de/infosystem to trainers, lecturers, teachers and anyone else engaged in education and training who wants to use computer-based learning programs to facilitate learning, to motivate his or her students to learn and to engage more actively with the learning material 01.

Drawing on specific examples from 14 different multimedia learning and information programs, all developed under the auspices of the BIBB between 1995 and 2002, the system:

  • discusses the general theoretical bases of computer-supported learning,
  • examines the creative, didactic and media-specific psychological attributes of the learning software,
  • explains the most common terms and
  • describes deployment options for training and education in the field.

The program sequences presented convey the didactic and content-specific possibilities of multimedia learning while at the same time stimulating educators to employ the various programs in their own training or educational work.

The system presents:

seven learning programs

  • Holzbearbeitung mit Maschinen [Woodworking with Machines]
  • Sicher ist Sicher. Arbeits- und Gesundheitsschutz in metallverarbeitenden Berufen [Being on the Safe Side: Occupational Health and Safety in Metalworking Occupations]
  • Elektrische Schutzmaßnahmen. Lernprogramm zur DIN VDE 0100 [Electrical Safety Measures: Learning Program for DIN VDE 0100]
