2005 Innovation in Continuing Education Prize ("WIP")

- BIBB awards four innovative continuing vocational training concepts -

Germany's Federal Institute of Vocational Education and Training ("BIBB") awarded its Innovation in Continuing Education Prize for innovative projects and ideas in the continuing vocational training field this year for the fifth time. The award ceremony was held under the auspices of the minister-president of the state of Baden-Württemberg, Mr Erwin Teufel. Minister-President Teufel and the president of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, Professor Helmut Pütz, presented the 2005 WIP awards - which come with € 2,500 in prize money for each award - to this year's four recipients on 28 February at the "didacta" trade fair for education and training in Stuttgart.

The competition for the 2005 Innovation in Continuing Education Prize drew a total of 133 submissions. The jury selected the following four continuing vocational training schemes as being particularly innovative and forward-looking:

digitaler möbelbau
Computergesteuerte Fertigungstechnologie. Gestaltung - Fertigung - Präsentation - Vermarktung
(digital furniture production - Computerized production technology. Design - production - presentation - marketing)

Recipient: Baufachfrau Berlin e.V., Verein zur Förderung von Frauen in Bau- und Ausbauberufen (association to foster women in construction and finishing occupations), Berlin

The "digitaler möbelbau" project teaches women in particular how to use computerized CNC and CAD technology to design furniture in creative, customer-oriented and environmentally-friendly ways. The project teaches the fundamentals of CNC and CAD-based design, the basic use of CNC technology, the environmentally-friendly use of materials deployed in furniture production, and the use of digital image editing and layout programmes for marketing new products. The digitaler möbelbau project gives centre stage to practical application: Students develop their own ideas for an item of furniture and then apply what they have learned during the project to the production of that particular piece of furniture. This includes drawing a design and preparing plans with the help of CAD technology, programming the CNC machine, planning the production sequence, producing the product and then presenting, advertising and marketing the item of furniture.

Follow me
Führungsfitness für Vorarbeiter in der Flugabfertigung der Flughafen München GmbH (FGM)

(Management training for supervisors in the flight handling section at Munich Airport)

Recipient: ego energetics, Freiamt

"Follow me" prepares skilled workers directly in the course of the work process for assuming more responsibility in their own areas of work. The award-winning version of this continuing training concept targets employees working in a supervisory position in the flight handling section of Munich Airport. Together with their loading team, they render vital services for aircraft and passengers, such as loading and unloading luggage, securing hazardous goods in the freight bay or guiding aircraft to the jetways that link airplanes with the terminal. One key objective of the Follow me programme is to develop a "supervisor identity" with the awareness that one's own leadership determines the quality of a group's work - an important factor in ensuring an airport's security, stability and economic competitiveness.

monkey
modulare und arbeitsplatznahe Qualifizierung im Bereich Schlüssel(key)kompetenzen
(Modular, job-related training in key skills)

Recipients: Berufliche Fortbildungszentren der Bayerischen Wirtschaft GmbH(bfz),
Forschungsinstitut Betriebliche Bildung (f-bb), Nuremburg

Employees from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) participating in the "monkey" project acquire modularly-organized, job-related key skills that they need in order to keep "their" company competitive and get it in shape for a wide variety of new challenges. The goal of the six-to-seven-month job-related course of continuing training is to prepare participants for new demands - in the area of project management or customer relations, for instance - being made of skilled labour. Consequently, planning and implementing projects, making effective and economical use of meagre time resources, working constructively with others, and effectively presenting the results of one's own work are subjects covered during training. The individual modules are geared not only to the requirements of the particular job but also to the learner's own specific training profile. Coaching is used as required to support learning processes and ensure learning results.

Work Based Learning
Lernen am Arbeitsplatz
(Work-based learning)

Recipient: Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Aachen

The "Work Based Learning" project is aimed at giving working adults who have not had access to university education to date the chance to earn a recognized degree, with credit being given for the skills they have acquired through formal education and in the course of their employment. To achieve this, the Aachen University of Applied Sciences works together with individuals who are interested in the Work Based Learning project and their employers to develop customized learning projects and lay down learning goals, a curriculum and the course requirements the individual must meet. Training revolves around concrete work at the individual's company that is organized to provide a learning opportunity for which the learner will receive credit. For the project's first stage, the Aachen University of Applied Sciences is planning to offer a Bachelor's degree for master tradesmen and tradeswomen and a Master's programme for Applied Polymer Chemistry for chemical laboratory assistants.

The university's project is integrated into the Developing European Work Based Learning Approaches and Methods project that is part of the European Commission's Socrates programme. Nine European countries are participating in the project which is aimed at developing a European approach and framework for establishing routes for accessing university education that incorporate learning that takes place in occupational practice.
