Vocational training research at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB)

Vocational training research is conducted at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) on the basis of the Vocational Training Act (Berufsbildungsgesetz - BBiG). According to the BBiG, vocational training research has the task of:

  • clarifying the fundamentals of vocational training,
  • tracking domestic, European and international developments in vocational training,
  • identifying requirements for the objectives and content of vocational training,
  • paving the way for further developments in the field of vocational training in view of changing needs, and
  • furthering the development of instruments and procedures for the provision of vocational training and promoting the transfer of knowledge and technology.

The thematic framework for this work is consequently a broad one. Details are laid down in four-year medium-term research and development plans and annual research programmes. The latter pools BIBB's in-house research projects that are to be conducted during the respective year.

The research conducted by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training has tackled numerous challenges in recent years: To ensure the quality of its research, BIBB set up the Vocational Training Research Committee and the Research Council  which advises the Institute in connection with the direction of its research activities and with drawing up research programmes. Developed to make it easier for external researchers to access BIBB's scientific data, the Research Data Centre (BIBB-FDZ) began operation in 2008. In compliance with the recommendations issued by the Science Council, BIBB has entered into numerous collaborative research activities and systematically expanded its efforts to support young researchers.
