Good knowledge of German indispensable for integration into the world of work and careers

Acquisition of the German language plays a major role in the occupational and social integration both of Eastern European resettlers of German origin now living in Germany and of workers moving to the country from non-German speaking countries. The Immigration Act, which came into force on 1 January 2005 and emphasises the necessity of sufficient command of spoken and written German, is also leading to a sustained rise in the level of interest in "German as a foreign language". The Common European Reference Framework for Languages, developed by the Council of Europe, also provides a uniform basis for the development of curricula and textbooks. German publishing companies have also intensified their operations in response to this by bringing out new publications on the topic of "German as a foreign language".

The bibliography "German for foreigners in the world of work and careers", published by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, presents a comprehensive and systematic overview both of textbooks and teaching materials currently available in printed form and of digital teaching and learning media relating to the teaching of the German language. The fact that the new text books teach and practise basic forms of communication for the world of careers and everyday work within the context of classes for the general learning of the German language is of particular interest to the world of work and careers. The bibliography is arranged according to both media and themes and is particularly aimed at educational providers conducting such integration measures.

For the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, this bibliography represents a continuation of a successful series of publications from the years 1996, 1998 and 2001, which saw BIBB intensively addressing the promotion of the German language in conjunction with vocational education measures.
