Accessibility Statement

We endeavour to make this Internet presence accessible to the widest possible group of users. This entails efforts on our part to pay due consideration to the needs of a wide range of people, some of these needs being very different in nature.

As a matter of principle, we are guided in this area by the requirements of the German Accessible Information Technology Ordinance BITV pursuant to §11 of the German Equal Opportunities for People with Disabilities Act.

Implementation of accessibility

The accessibility of an Internet presence is an ongoing process requiring continuous monitoring and adaptation. The same applies to the operation and launch of an Internet portal. We have already commenced our initial implementation of accessibility.

The requirements of accessibility will be accorded due consideration in respect of all new articles published in future. This will involve a more readily comprehensible use of language, insofar as the information permits. In future, we will also seek to implement all content in the form of Internet pages (HTML). We will only make use of other document formats (such as pdf files) in cases where there is no viable alternative. This will apply to such areas as a second publication of print media on the Internet.

We would ask you to appreciate that the preparation and integration of the approximately 100,000 Internet pages and documents of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training will require some time.

Quality standards

Our website is based on the international technical standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The specifications relating to XHTML 1.0 'strict' and CSS 2.1 are of particular significance in this regard. We have implemented the recommendations of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) insofar as these are reasonable and viable in our case. The fact that we ourselves attach the highest level of significance to new problem-solving approaches and innovation may mean that, in some areas, we take a quite conscious decision to depart from adherence to certain standards. We will be happy to provide you with the detailed rationale in such cases.

Given even the current state of technology, the fact that a few users will continue to experience problems of accessibility in individual cases cannot be excluded. Within the scope of our quality process, we are continuing to improve our Internet presence, enabling us to reduce problems of accessibility still further.
