Multimedia learning media for training in retail services

Multimedia learning media to provide training support in the occupation of "Management Assistant for Retail Services" are available with immediate effect from the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). The CD series "Learning Arrangements in Retail Services" provides for the first time a chance for all young people and adults to acquire the content of the third training year of "Management Assistant for Retail Services" independent of time or place and via self-directed and self-organised learning. Especially those who have completed the two-year training occupation of "Sales Assistant for Retail Services" are thus afforded the opportunity of continuing their learning and preparing for the external examination even if they do not have a training contract. This learning medium offers an additional instrument to support the permeability between these two training occupations stipulated in the training ordinance. The CD's are closely related to practice and have been prepared in an employment oriented way. They encompass the compulsory and elective training modules from the new training regulations for retail services occupations and largely cover both the company and school-based content of the third year of training.

The first five CD's, which have now been released, cover the areas of

  • Retail Processes,
  • Advice, Goods and Sales,
  • Commercial Management and Control,
  • Personnel and
  • IT Applications.

Three further CD's relating to the thematic areas of "Marketing", "Procurement Based Merchandise Planning" and "Inventory Control Analysis" are scheduled for probable release in the 4th quarter of 2007.

The contents of all learning arrangements are structured under the four main menus of Learning Situations, Knowledge, Knowledge Trainer and Glossary and are interlinked. Learning Situations present complex assignments of tasks and problems, which are made up of several partial tasks and are closely oriented to company practice examples. The Knowledge Section provides a systematic and detailed representation of all relevant contents of the learning arrangements, these forming the basis of knowledge required to work through the tasks contained within the Learning Situations.

The Knowledge Trainer enables learners to monitor the competences and skills required to solve the practical tasks which they have acquired in the Learning Situations and in the Knowledge Section. The Glossary contains more in-depth information on selected specialist terms. Each of the respective programmes also offers various additional functions, such as learning aids, a shopping centre, access to information on the status of learning or how much of the programme has been worked through, and so forth.

The learning arrangements were designed and produced by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training in conjunction with the National Agency for Vocational Education and Training in the Retail Sector (zbb) and the company ModernLearning. Development work received support from the Association of German Retailers (HDE) and the Unified Service Sector Trade Union ver.di.

The multimedia learning materials can be ordered at a price of €39.80 per CD from the Christiani Technical Institute for Vocational Training, one of BIBB's publishing partners, at www.christiani.de. The order numbers of the individual CD's are as follows.
