MATSE: a new occupation for people with mathematical talent who enjoy the challenge of working with numbers
Anyone with a good head for figures and the necessary mathematical talent and who enjoys programming will find a modern and attractive dual vocational education and training alternative on offer from 1 August 2007 in the form of "Mathematical and technical software developer", which goes under its German acronym of MATSE and is a three-year training occupation for high-ability young people interested in using mathematical models and methods to solve demanding problems from the fields of technology, the natural sciences and economics. MATSE replaces the existing occupation of "Mathematical and technical assistant", its main feature being a new profile of core competences in the areas of mathematics and information technology. Commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has been working in conjunction with the social partners and specialist associations to draw up the new training regulations.
MATSE will particularly lead to such areas of future employment as working in institutes of higher education, research institutes, data processing centres and IT companies, but will also provide opportunities to pursue careers at banks and insurance companies. And professional perspectives are good. Experiences with the predecessor occupation have shown that those who have completed mathematical and technical raining are in demand as skilled workers and generally find permanent employment quickly.
Mathematical and technical software developers
- apply models from the fields of information technology, technology, the natural sci-ences and economics,
- analyse problems and develop and describe models in a formalised way,
- design and realise object-oriented, complex software systems,
- document the software development process,
- plan quality assurance measures and implement these,
