BIBB sets up Research Data Centre for vocational education and training
Offering need-oriented services for vocational training research purposes on the basis of extensive data stocks: This is the aim of the Research Data Centre - or BIBB-FDZ - that has been set up at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). The Research Data Centre's offerings particularly target vocational training researchers who would like to use the microdata stocks that BIBB has collected over the years for their research analyses - be it for dissertations, doctoral theses or post-doctoral theses, for research projects, policy guidance or for specialist papers. In order to be able to support these types of activities in the best possible way in future, the BIBB-FDZ will develop a variety of information-related functions and services in the coming months that will enable users to work largely autonomously with the Research Data Centre's microdata. In addition, it will offer advisory services and be involved in the operational side of conducting representative BIBB company surveys.
According to Manfred Kremer, president of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, by setting up its own research data centre, BIBB is making a long-term contribution toward improving the information data infrastructure in the vocational training sector. "The aim is to further expand the communication and transfer of knowledge between BIBB and universities on the one hand and between BIBB and non-university research facilities on the other. In doing so, the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training is strengthening its role and importance as a recognized centre of excellence for conducting research on and progressively developing initial and continuing vocational training in Germany."
The FDZ has, first of all, the task of systematizing, documenting and processing BIBB data records so that they can be made available for external use by vocational training researchers. These activities will include developing an infrastructure that meets data protection requirements. Starting in 2009, the range of FDZ products and services will be continually expanded and made known through various media.
