Continuing vocational training: BIBB check list helps assess quality of providers and training

Today, continuing education and training is more indispensable than ever for one's job and occupation. Employees are continually called upon to keep pace with the fast-changing and, in some cases, growing demands they must meet at work. It therefore comes as no surprise that the number of continuing training providers and courses is growing constantly. But knowing what is what is difficult: How can I tell judge the quality of a provider or the continuing training course I've been offered? What do I have to pay attention to when making a choice? Answers to these and many other questions can be found in the brochure "Checkliste - Qualität beruflicher Weiterbildung" (Check List - Quality of Continuing Vocational Training) which the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has issued in an updated edition.
This guide offers persons who are interested in continuing education and training valuable tips, suggestions and pointers for identifying those continuing training offerings that match their particular needs and specific requirements best.
The brochure focuses on the following 'key questions':

  • What should an individual pay attention to when choosing a continuing training course?
  • What does continuing training cost and what should be included in the contract?
  • How does the provider ensure the quality of its courses? How qualified are the instructors?
  • How is the continuing training measure structured? What methods and media are used? How strongly practice-oriented is the training?
  • What type of certificate or qualification do participants earn upon completion of the measure? How can it be used to advance their careers?

An extensive glossary that covers terms like 'provider' and 'competent body' plus lengthy address, link and literature lists with pertinent information round out the guide. The Check List should not and cannot replace one-on-one guidance services. However, the new BIBB brochure offers a sound informational foundation that makes it easier to better assess and judge the quality of continuing training offerings and providers.

The German brochure "Checkliste - Qualität beruflicher Weiterbildung" can be downloaded free of charge from the BIBB homepage at www.bibb.de/de/checkliste.htm .

The printed German version is also available free of charge from the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) and can be ordered by fax: +49 (0) 228 107 2967 or by e-mail at checkliste@bibb.de
