BIBB updates simulation game catalogue for vocational education and training
Simulation games are 'hot' in the vocational education and training field. In response to strong demand, the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has updated its multimedia-based guide "Planspiele in der beruflichen Bildung" (Simulation Games in Vocational Education and Training). This publication contains a reference book plus a CD-ROM. The simulation game catalogue on the CD-ROM is particularly popular. It offers an overview of more than 500 current German-language simulation game products, a description of their content and the ways they can be deployed in day-to-day vocational education and training practice, and selected playable demo versions.
For individuals undergoing initial or continuing vocational training, simulation games are particularly suited to simulating 'emergencies' that could arise in one's future day-to-day working life and practising how to handle them. Simulation games foster the ability to think on a complex and contextualized level. On top of this, learning with the help of simulation games is fun. In light of the fact that this tool - which was introduced to the market in 2000 - has met with a very positive response from VET practitioners, BIBB is issuing its guide in a revised fourth edition.
The current edition has brought the information on all simulation game products listed in past editions up to date and added the latest developments and trends on the simulation game market. In addition to covering 'classic' simulation game concepts such as computer, group, individual, board and online simulation games, the fourth edition also presents 'open' forms of simulation games (free-form games) which play an increasingly larger role in organizational learning in companies. This edition uses a new classification system that additionally makes it easier to select products on a targeted basis. More than 80 simulation game trainers and users report on their experience with simulation games and offer recommendations.
BIBB' internet-based Simulation Game Forum supplements the information that the reference book and CD-ROM offer on simulation games. The forum is a platform for anyone interested in the medium 'simulation games'. In addition to providing information on communication products offered through the internet, the Forum also presents new simulation game ideas, information for trainers and simulation game developers plus a calendar of events. Simulation game suppliers can also use the Forum to present their products.
