Occupational plans and the qualification and occupation pathways taken after leaving school
Findings from the BIBB school leaver surveys conducted in the years 2004 through 2006
The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has released the first aggregate documentation of the BIBB school leaver surveys from the years 2004 through 2006.
Youths were asked about their occupational wishes and orientation and about their (occupational) destination following completion of their secondary schooling. The questions examined included:
- Are youths interested in in-company vocational training?
- Do boys and girls have different interests when it comes to occupations?
- What chance of landing a training place do youths with a lower secondary school leaving certificate or an immigrant background have?
The study shows that most youths are interested in undergoing vocational training. The analyses of their occupational destination examines in detail the influence had by gender, the role played by ethnic and regional background, and the level of education individuals completed and the marks they earned.
This study provides persons working in the education research field extensive data for developing forecasts for the number of training places that will be needed and for prompting measures aimed at making it easier for disadvantaged persons to access vocational training.
