Industrial electrician - New two-year electrical occupation now 'on the grid'

The wide range of occupations to be found in the electrical industry was expanded by the addition of a new training occupation (an occupation which requires completion of formal vocational training) as of 1 August: the two-year training occupation Industrial Electrician. The new training regulations were developed in large part at the instigation of the Association of the Bavarian Metal-Working and Electrical Industries. This work was coordinated by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) on behalf of the German government. The new regulations were developed in cooperation with industry experts.

This new occupation constitutes a new option - in addition to electrical occupations that require completion of 3.5 years of training - for enterprises and youths. It offers companies a possibility to train skilled workers for production work. The new two-year training programme additionally gives youths a possibility to quickly earn qualification as a skilled worker. When the company providing the training and the trainee want, time spent undergoing training to become an industrial electrician can be credited toward additional training, depending on the trainee's specialization. As a result, youths can then continue their training in a 3.5 year programme for another electrical occupation.

Industrial electricians can specialize in Industrial Engineering or Devices and Systems. Industrial electricians work on, assemble and connect mechanical components and electrical equipment. Their work includes measuring and analyzing electrical functions and systems, assessing the safety of electrical equipment and systems and installing and configuring IT systems. Industrial electricians are professional electricians as defined by accident prevention regulations.

Industrial electricians who specialize in Industrial Engineering additionally install electrical systems and equipment and perform maintenance. They work in companies in the metal-working and electrical industries, in plant engineering and construction and in public utilities or power supply companies. By contrast, industrial electricians who have specialized in Devices and Systems primarily produce electronic components, devices and systems according to customer specifications and put them into operation. They frequently work in production in the electrical and electronics industry and in the information and communications technology field.
