BIBB conference on the costs and benefits of in-company vocational training
Experts from Germany and abroad discuss current research findings
What factors play a role in a firm's decision to provide in-company vocational training? From an economic viewpoint, does providing vocational training still pay off for enterprises? Do companies in different countries or vocational training systems make similar decisions or do different factors play a role? These and similar questions will be the focus of the international conference Enterprises' Decision to Provide In-company Vocational Training - Economic Research and Analyses. To mark the conclusion of its research project Costs and Benefits of In-company Vocational Training, the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) is inviting all interested parties from day-to-day VET practice and the research field to Bonn for information and discussions on 23 and 24 September 2009. Project findings from BIBB and new research being conducted by other researchers and VET experts from Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland and the Netherlands will be presented and discussed at the conference.
Not only in Germany do enterprises attach great value to 'dual' vocational training (which combines part-time vocational schooling with practical work experience) for young people. The reasons why enterprises provide in-company vocational training for youths are manifold. Ensuring a source of young skilled workers, continuing a long-standing tradition and fulfilling a company's social responsibility are important reasons alongside purely economic considerations.
The agenda for the two-day BIBB conference includes important topics such as whether the deployment of trainees in production processes covers the cost of their training and whether enterprises consider in-company vocational training to be an investment in future skilled workers. Questions regarding the influence had by the institutional conditions on the labour market or vocational training market and concerning the costs and benefits of vocational training from an international point of view will also be discussed.
The deputy president and head of research at BIBB, Professor Dr Reinhold Weiß, will open the conference at 10 a.m. on 23 September. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the question "Dual vocational training: A worthwhile investment for enterprises in the future as well?" Further information regarding the programme, venue, registration fee and the conditions for attending the conference is available in German at www.bibb.de/veranstaltungen . Registration deadline is 14 September.
