Continuing training in later working life
Empirical findings and suggestions
In the wake of current demographic trends, the call for lifelong learning that education policy raises is of growing importance. Later working life and thus older workers are increasingly the focus of interest. This group's insufficient participation in continuing training is lamented in this connection. The advancement of continuing training for older workers does not however primarily mean developing special training offerings for older persons. These efforts must take a much broader approach.
This publication presents the findings from the research project Continuing Training Concepts for Later Working Life (WeisE). The project was conducted by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training and was divided into three phases:
- Identifying training needs and approaches for older workers
- Systematising and typing approaches to continuing training that are currently practised
- Conducting case studies for the five types that were identified.
The author then formulates guidelines which encompass educational principles, the organi-sation of personnel development and the structuring of operational conditions to ensure that learning is pursued throughout the individual's entire working career.
