2010 Hermann Schmidt Prize - Call for submissions

Focus of the 2010 competition: Vocational education and training for environmental protection and sustainable development

The world conference held in Bonn in the spring of 2009 at the halfway mark in the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development took stock of the results of the work done to date and issued recommendations for action to anchor sustainable development in national education plans. BIBB ties into these findings and objectives with this year's Hermann Schmidt Prize.

In light of more stringent environmental standards and rising prices for energy and raw materials, sustainable management also pays in economic terms and leads to competitive advantages. This is true not only for industry but also for crafts, the skilled trades and the service sector. In this connection, vocational education and training - with its objective of teaching occupational competence - is called upon to make a contribution to environmental protection and sustainable development and thus toward boosting the overall quality and attractiveness of vocational training processes.

The 2010 Hermann Schmidt Prize will be awarded to companies and bodies in the vocational training field (such as vocational schools, vocational training providers, chambers) for campaigns and activities in the area of initial and continuing vocational training that successfully implement attractive training concepts and offerings involving environmental protection and sustainable development.

These campaigns should reach as many participants and players as possible, be highly innovative in their substance, exhibit intensive company participation and offer convincing prospects for the translation of their concepts and offerings into long-term activities and for their continued and progressive development.Examples of initiatives that are to be singled out for this award include initiatives that

  • are geared to company or sector needs;
  • target individual sectors and/or regions and are implemented correspondingly;
  • revolve around collaboration that is conducted on a cross-trade basis and involves qualifications of relevance to the sustainability principle and/or environmental protection;
  • cover collaborative activities and networking involving a variety of learning venues and incorporate various partners;
  • are aimed at different target groups;
  • carry out skill development for management and training personnel.

Prize monies of € 3,000, € 2,000 and € 1,000 and possibly special prizes will be awarded.
