Funding programmes and initiatives

The German government expends large amounts of public funds to make up for shortages in the number of in-company training places. Employment agencies, the federal government, state governments and the EU finance a broad spectrum of different training place programmes. Government activities give centre stage to remedial funding, in other words, partial direct government financing for in-company training places or full external financing for non-company training places. Nevertheless, a large share of funding activities are set up to help build structures in the vocational education and training system and further raise the level of the system's quality. Promoting particular target groups constitutes another priority. This page gives an overview of the various funding programmes in which the BIBB participates.

Current funding programmes under participation of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB)

  • JOBSTARTER - Training for the future
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports innovation and structural development in German vocational education and training through its programme "JOBSTARTER - Training for the future". The goal of the programme is to offer more traineeships for young people in the regions by getting companies and enterprises to supply initial vocational education and training.
  • JOBSTARTER - VerA Initiative
The Senior Experts Service (SES) extends its VerA training initiative throughout the country: Honorary training tutors support young people in reaching their training goals and prevent them from dropping out of training.
  • JOBSTARTER CONNECT
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) implemented the JOBSTARTER CONNECT programme to support the development and testing of measures for early integration of young people into the dual system of vocational education and training through uniform federal training modules.
  • Funding of pilot projects
The funding of pilot projects and their accompanying academic studies is a statutory obligation of the Federal Institute
    • Funding priority 2010-2013: "Quality development and assurance in in-company vocational education and training"
    • Funding priority 2010-2013: "Vocational education and training for sustainable development"
    • Funding priority 2010-2013: "New pathways into the dual training system - Heterogeneity as an opportunity to secure skilled labour"
  • Vocational orientation in inter-company vocational training centres and comparable institutions
By offering early practice-related and systematic vocational orientation in inter-company vocational training centres and comparable institutions to young people attending schools of general education and in particular school types offering lower secondary school leaving certificates, it is intended to make the transition from school to dual vocational training easier for those young people, which contributes significantly to reducing the number of school leavers without a school leaving certificate and/or without a chance of getting a training place.
  • Planning and funding inter-company vocational training centres (ÜBS)
Using funds from the BMBF budget, the BIBB supports the modernisation, expansion and acquisition of equipment of inter-company vocational training centres (ÜBS), which help to create or improve the training capability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
  • National Agency Education for Europe at the BIBB
The National Agency Education for Europe at the BIBB considers the shaping of a "European Education Area" and the successful implementation of the EU education programme for lifelong learning (LEONARDO DA VINCI and GRUNDTVIG) a great challenge for the coming years, and contributes to their realisation.
