Perfectly targeted: new vocational training for hunting ground supervisors

The basic principle behind the updated training regulations for the occupation of hunting ground supervisor could be described as the establishment of a link between tradition and modernity. Although the main contents remain the design of hunting grounds, the organisation of game hunting in accordance with animal rights and wildlife protection, increasing ecological awareness also means that the three years of training within the occupation now also include activities related to the protection of species, habitat and nature as well as covering public relations and nature education.

The new training regulations were commissioned by the Federal Government and developed under the lead management of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) acting in conjunction with branch specialists of the social partners and representatives of the federal states. They enter into force on 1 August 2010.
The previous training regulations date back 28 years, and their updating represents an adaptation to a modern activity profile. A skeleton curriculum for the school-based part of the dual vocational education and training course is now also available for the first time.

Issues connected with the sustainable management of game stocks and the consideration of such respective natural conditions as soil, weather, the climate and the effects these exert on habitats have now become considerably more important. New aspects of the job also include the avoidance of damage caused by game and striking the right balance between the animals' rights to their habitat and the desire of humans to seek relaxation in nature. Further requirements are legal knowledge, safe handling of hunting weapons and the ability to keep and use hunting dogs in the correct manner.

Hunting ground supervisors work for private, local government and state hunting and forestry operations and are also employed in protected areas, by associations or in initial and continuing training related to hunting
