Training market in upheaval

The development of the training market in 2010 as reflected by the training market statistics of the Federal Employment Agency, Discussion paper issue 121

An analysis of developments in 2010 conducted on the basis of the training market statistics of the Federal Employment Agency shows that activity is increasingly returning to the training market in the wake of the collapse in the number of school leavers as a result of demographic developments and following economic recovery. Opportunities for training place applicants are improving whilst it is already proving difficult to fill company-based apprenticeships in certain regions and branches. At the same time, a shift is taking place in the prevailing training market conditions in the East and in the West. Applicants in the federal states of the former East Germany now have better chances of securing an apprenticeship than their counterparts in West Germany. Notwithstanding this, the number of training place applicants still seeking placement at the end of the 2010 reporting year still significantly exceeded the amount of unfilled places. Particularly applicants living in regions of West Germany where unemployment is above average experience success on a relatively infrequent basis.
