Work and employment in the health and beauty spa services sector
An empirical analysis of skills requirements, Discussion paper 120
From 2006 to 2010, the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) conducted a number of development projects with a view to ascertaining the need within the dual VET system for independent health and beauty spa qualifications within the vocational field of activity of personal services. The aim was to investigate the extent to which the dual system of vocational education and training can tap into the health and beauty spa sector, a segment of the employment system without any tradition of training which is undergoing intensive growth.
The present investigation comprises an online survey of companies providing health and beauty spa services, 18 case studies, analyses of literature, materials and job advertisements and expert discussions. This has served as the basis for an analysis of tasks and activities within the health and beauty spa sector and for the recording of skills requirements and structures according due consideration to initial and continuing training opportunities in order to be able to draw conclusions with regard to existing skills needs.
