Youths who are embarking on a career today: Prepared better - Prepared differently for the future?
New BIBB publication with reports from the youth research and education research fields
The number of youths who have not been able to find a training place is still too high in the face of Germany's emerging shortage of skilled labour and raises new questions for the country's vocational training system: How prepared are youths for meeting today's new challenges? What is needed to find a vocational training place and have a successful start in vocational training? With what expectations and fears do they respond to change? And: How can enterprises prepare themselves for the competition over trainees that the future is expected to bring? In response to these and other questions, the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has published "Neue Jugend, neue Ausbildung? Beiträge aus der Jugend- und Bildungsforschung" (New Youths, New Training? Reports from Youth Research and Education Research) which it compiled together with the German Youth Institute (DJI).
The articles in this German-language compilation deal primarily with the transition phase from secondary school to vocational training which is of fundamental importance not only for a young person's personal and occupational plans but also for ensuring the competitiveness of trade and industry. Topics that the authors of these articles analyse include: What effects do changing living conditions have on a young person's personal development and life plans? What is the course of the transition from secondary school to vocational training? Which factors influence the quality of vocational training?
The topics covered by this book range from studies on trainees' expectations regarding the quality of their training, on preparations for choosing a career and on how important the social environment is for starting vocational training and entering the working world, all the way to an analysis of binge drinking as risk behaviour that youths exhibit in their efforts to deal with the adult world.
