President Esser: "BIBB congress will set new directions for vocational education and training in Germany"

According to the new president of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), Professor Dr Friedrich Hubert Esser, the 6th BIBB Vocational Education and Training Congress to be held in Berlin in September will give important impetus and signals for the future development of vocational education and training (VET) in Germany. "BIBB will make central VET policy challenges the main focus of this year's congress. We will present new findings, outline concepts, provide impetus and foster the VET policy debate particularly regarding transition management, skill development, the organising and designing of sustainable occupational profiles that will meet the challenges of the future, skill upgrading for unskilled and semi-skilled workers, measures to ensure a supply of skilled labour, and the internationalisation of VET." BIBB's president is also particularly pleased that the congress will be opened by Federal President Christian Wulff. Federal Minister of Education and Research Professor Dr Annette Schavan has also confirmed that she will come.

"With this event," Professor Esser continued, "BIBB - in its special capacity as an intermediary between the political sector, research community and VET practitioners in connection with VET issues 0 is offering a major opportunity for participants to examine current and future challenges at length and outline perspectives together."

The 6th BIBB Vocational Education and Training Congress will be held in Berlin on 19 and 20 September 2011 under the motto "Developing competences - Opening up opportunities". The congress is aimed at all persons in positions of responsibility in connection with vocational education and training 0 in enterprises, trade associations and chambers, unions, ministries, administrative bodies, schools, training facilities and university and non-university research institutes. "BIBB wants to support this broad and in-depth exchange at all levels of the VET system," Professor Esser stressed. "For this reason, VET experts from Germany and abroad are all cordially invited to attend!"
Representatives from the research community, social partners and VET practice will have an opportunity in five forums and 21 working groups to discuss and evaluate recent results and findings, outline future developments in the vocational education and training field, identify areas where reform is needed, and develop practical options for implementing these reforms.

The five forums will focus on:

  • The vocational training market and the employment system
  • The modernisation of vocational education and training
  • Vocational education and training in the course of life
  • Vocational education and training for specific target groups
  • The internationality of vocational education and training

The 6th BIBB Vocational Education and Training Congress will be accompanied by an exhibition where representatives from the education industry will inform visitors about their latest products for use in day-to-day VET practice in the workplace or classroom. The exhibition is being organised by Didacta Verband, the association of the German education industry.
