BIBB new co-editor of the "Internationales Handbuch der Berufsbildung"
The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) in Bonn has assumed responsibility in cooperation with the Institut für Berufs- und Betriebspädagogik (institute for vocational pedagogics and company-based training pedagogics) at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg for editing the "Internationales Handbuch der Berufsbildung" (IHBB - international handbook of vocational education and training). "Assuming the editorship is another important activity for raising our international profile," explained Professor Dr Reinhold Weiß, deputy president and head of research at BIBB. "By assuming this editorship, BIBB will help pool international vocational training expertise in Germany and develop it on a sustained basis. With the handbook, BIBB additionally serves the growing need for information about the vocational education and training systems in other countries." This standard work contains, for instance, information regarding how vocational training programmes in other countries compare with German programmes that qualify trainees for a specific occupation. The need for such information is growing in tandem with the international business of German trade and industry and the immigration of persons with 'foreign' qualifications. The most current edition features the revised country background reports for Poland and Scotland.
Country background reports 0 currently a total of 42 0 from Albania to China and the USA to Cyprus constitute the main part of the handbook. These reports offer insights into the socio-economic conditions, structures and organisation of vocational education and training in the respective country and outline its development over time. The handbook is updated on a regular basis. Other country background reports are currently being prepared for Malaysia, Indonesia, Spain and The Netherlands, among others.
The handbook was launched in 1995 by the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) and has developed into a well-founded standard work for decision-makers and practitioners in the vocational training field. It is overseen by a group of editors who include representatives of the vocational pedagogics chairs of the universities of Kassel, Cologne, Konstanz and Bremen and the DIPF in Frankfurt am Main.
The handbook can be purchased from BIBB's publishing partner the W. Bertelsmann Verlag in Bielefeld. Further information is available at www.wbv.de/artikel/6001738.
