Two years Internet forum for trainers

Already two years on the Internet, and the community of trainers who provide the latest information on initial and continuing vocational training free of charge at www.foraus.de, exchange information, establish contacts, discuss various topics involving vocational training and learn from each other is growing all the time: the information and discussion community at the virtual Internet forum foraus.de, which was created in June 2001 by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) in collaboration with thinkhouse GmbH, has 3,800 members at present.01

Companies which are now offering training positions without meeting any formal training requirements for the first time as a result of the Trainer Qualification Regulation having been rescinded, is particularly salient at foraus.de: Under www.foraus.de they can obtain all the information they need for training and at the same time learn from the "old hands". And anyone who has questions on the rescinding of the Trainer Qualification Regulation can visit the forums set up especially for this topic in order to voice their opinion and discuss issues with others.

In particular, www.foraus.de offers its community members the following:

  • A news area with various forums and chats along with virtual seminars which open up the possibility of exploring and discussing topics relating to initial and continuing vocational training in more depth
  • Current top topics, which are presented several times a year and released for discussion
  • Ongoing updated notices on vocational education and training
  • The foraus.de learning centre with teaching material on methodological-didactical training problems
  • The foraus.de library with notes on important literature sources on vocational education and training
  • A virtual pinboard on which to post questions, requests and offers
  • The possibility to set up one's own foraus homepage with a foraus business card informing other members about oneself
  • 1 on 1 chatrooms where members can get together and enter into direct contact whenever they visit the community
  • A foraus mailbox
  • The foraus newsletter, which is sent out to all the members of foraus at least once a month.

But there is even more: The community will be testing the use of a virtual classroom within the framework of a "virtual seminar" in a pilot project taking place in September 2003. The first topic to be addressed will be "The trial period (if it is well planned) guarantees that training will be successful".

In collaboration with teachers online, topics relating to dual training will then be increasingly addressed. In addition, a pool of experts in which the community members can ask special questions on special topics is currently under construction.

footnotes

1. The structure of the virtual Internet forum is based on the philosophy of the "community": persons with similar vocational interests and experience are brought together, forming a community of trainers exploring common learning, comparing notes and helping each other out. Members of the community also get involved in the organisation and design of the community by for instance submitting proposals for topics for new learning programmes, offering chats or forums, setting up working groups or by encouraging an exchange of experience. "foraus.de" makes technical tools available for this purpose and helps out in the execution.
