The director of Peru's National Industrial Training Service (Servicio Nacional de Adiestramiento en Trabajo Industrial, SENATI), Mr Jorge A Rivera, visited BIBB on an information-gathering trip on 4 December 2012 and was welcomed by project managers from the International Cooperation and Advisory Services section.

The purpose of his visit was to establish initial contacts with BIBB and gather detailed information about the factors that play a role in the success of Germany's 'dual' vocational training system (which combines part-time vocational schooling with practical work experience). Questions regarding the development of training regulations, the training of instruction personnel and the role that the social partners and government play in the German vocational training system were of particular interest for the head of SENATI.
At present the Peruvian institution's main concern is to counteract the image problem that vocational training has throughout the country by implementing long-term measures. For this reason, SENATI aims to make vocational training more attractive in the coming years by conducting public awareness campaigns and, in this connection, by concentrating on the training of vocational training personnel and on fostering dual structures.
SENATI is a private vocational training institution in Peru. It was established in 1961 and is 30% financed through a mandatory charge which all Peruvian enterprises with 20 or more employees are required to pay (0.75% of the salaries the respective company pays). SENATI generates the remaining 70% through its initial and continuing training programmes. SENATI currently serves a total of 56,000 trainees throughout the country. Training programmes last three years as a rule. The prerequisite for beginning a vocational training programme is the completion of the tenth grade at a school that provides general education.
