BIBB Business Report 2002

Activities, projects and results of work of the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (Bonn)

What initiatives promoting initial and continuing vocational training in Germany originated at the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB) last year? In what areas were international contacts in the area of vocational education and training intensified? What was done to ensure that young people are able to complete training programmes and that employees undergo continuing training? This and many other questions are addressed in the 2002 Annual Report of the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB), which has just been put out. It provides a survey of the activities, research projects and results of work performed by the Institute, which has turned into a nationally and internationally reputed centre of competence in the field of initial and continuing vocational training in its more than thirty years of existence and is thus part of the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg centre of science and research.

The Annual Report offers a look inter alia at

  • work aimed at modernising initial and continuing vocational training (e.g.: 13 training occupations have been modernised, 8 new ones have been created and seven new continuing training occupations have been developed)
  • the research activities of the Institute e.g.: 31 research projects and 145 other projects have been carried out, 14 of which deal with international aspects of vocational training
  • activities aimed at "internationalising" initial and continuing vocational training (e.g. European and international aspects in the development of occupations, international networks promoting the transfer of information and know-how, the national agency "Education for Europe" (NA) at BIBB and the office for International Marketing of Vocational Education (iMOVE) at BIBB)
  • research supporting the various programmes of the Federal Government (e.g.: the "Immediate Action Programme to Reduce Youth Unemployment - Training, Qualification and Employment for Young People", the project "Regional advising for protecting and developing training places in eastern Germany" (Regio-Kompetenz-Ausbildung for short)" the "InnoRegio" programme)
  • Work performed in the area of pilot projects to test innovations in vocational education and training in the field of practice (e.g.: 54 pilot projects were assisted in 10 areas of pilot project concentration, while the transfer of results was supported in eight topic-related working groups encompassing multiple pilot projects)
  • Promotion of shared vocational training centres and their further development into centres of competence along with work in the "train-the-trainers" field (e.g.: foraus.de, the trainers' forum in the Internet)
  • Work at the project holder "Innovation in Initial and Continuing Vocational Training", which is based at the Institute, with five lead projects of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research ("L 3 lifelong learning - continuing training: a basic need", "MedicDAT Media Interface for Content-Based Connection of Scientific Documents, Abstracts and Text Books", "VS-C Networked Chemistry Studies", "VHS Virtual Adult Education College" and "Seneka Service Network for Initial and Continuing Training Processes")
  • The activities of the project "Training and Further Training for Young Migrants (IBQM)" and the "Good Practice Center for Vocational Support for Disadvantaged People (GPC)" (e.g.: the information platform (GPC-Online) inter alia offering a database on providers and communication platform (GPC community),
  • the establishment of a Communications and Information System for Vocational Training (KIBB) at BIBB.

This information is supplemented by a survey of publications put out in 2002 including learning material and the informational and documentation systems of the Institute, data, facts, financials and the quantitative development of the Institute along with a wide variety of additional information on the Institute's work. A register of search terms allows you to quickly locate particular topics.
