How are mask-makers trained?

BIBB helps the field of practice in implementing the training regulation

There has been a state-recognised training occupation of "mask-maker" since August 2002. What does this regulation mean for companies which have training programmes - the operas and theatre companies, television broadcasters and film producers? How can one convey and teach the creativity required in this occupation, designing masks and hair-dos while at the same time cultivating sensitivity and an intuition in dealing with singers, actors, directors and costume-makers? What is needed in order to make sure that young people still have fun in this occupation, to guide them successfully through training while at the same time communicating the high levels of stress, the time pressure, irregular working times and difficult "customers" involved in the actual field of practice? The "Explanations and Application Help for the Training Regulation for "Mask-Makers", published by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB), help out people dealing with these questions in the field of training practice.

Trainers, trainees, vocational school teachers, examiners and all other people interested in this type of vocational training will find a "guide to implementation of the framework curricula for the skills and know-how required for the occupation of "mask-maker" at vocational schools in these "Explanations .".

The "Explanations ."

  • Provide a commentary on the individual sections in the training regulation, addressing questions relating to the training agreement, organisational structure and the training process,
  • Vividly describe the general training plan so that companies providing training can convey this content regardless of their structure or specialisation,
  • Illustrate the training content in terms of what is required for practical training on site, while furnishing additional tips going on top of this,
  • Offer an information service, including with notes on selected buzzwords,
  • Present checklists helping companies dealing with training mask-makers for the first time tackle the most important tasks (e.g. "What has to be done prior to the commencement of training?", "obligations of the company performing training" or "the first day"),
  • Furnish information on the framework curriculum for vocational classroom instruction,
  • Give references to additional literature, materials and addresses.
