All occupations at a glance in the "Verzeichnis der anerkannten Ausbildungsberufe 2003"
What occupation should I learn? Young people who want to undergo qualified formal vocational training in Germany have to decide at the end of their secondary schooling which occupation they want to learn and where they want to receive their training. Those who are interested in Germany's so-called "dual vocational training" system (which divides training between part-time vocational school and an actual business) presently have 350 "recognized occupations that require formal training" (Ausbildungsberufe) to choose from. Training for these occupations is provided in the industrial sector, the skilled trades, civil service, agricultural sector and in the area of the "professions" which include pharmacists, doctors, accountants and attorneys. Those who prefer attending a full-time vocational school have a choice of 117 occupations. The designations of the individual occupations that can be learned in the dual vocational training system or at full-time vocational schools, how long it takes to complete training and much more can be found in the new Verzeichnis der anerkannten Ausbildungsberufe 2003 (index of recognised occupations that require formal training; reporting period: September 30, 2001 - October 1, 2002).
Published by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB), an updated edition of this German-language index is issued every year. In addition to the above information, this publication also provides details on:
- Addresses and telephone numbers of the offices responsible for vocational training (chambers) in all fields (industry, the skilled trades, etc.)Training regulations for occupations in the health care and social services fields
- Occupations with special arrangements for training disabled persons
- Advanced occupational qualification that requires supplementary further vocational training (Fortbildungsberufe)
- Occupations in which qualified persons can take an examination for certification as a master craftsman
- Sources (Federal Law Gazette, Federal Gazette) for the training regulations and outline curricula of the individual occupations

- Occupations with diplomas / certificates that are equivalent to corresponding diplomas / certificates issued in France and Austria
- Occupations whose training regulations went into effect on August 1, 2003.
