Report submitted to the Board of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) - Extract
Katrin Gutschow
The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union adopted a recommendation on the establishment of the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning (EQF) in April 2008. The EQF is expected to serve as a translation device to make national qualifications more readable and understandable across different countries in Europe and thus promote citizens' mobility between countries and facilitate their lifelong learning.

Prof. Dr. Reinhold Weiß, Deputy President and Head of Research at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), Bonn
It is easy to call for the bundling of training occupations in occupational groups, and to justify that demand. It is a matter of increasing flexibility for the enterprises providing training and promoting permeability for the graduates. In view of the declining numbers of school leavers, it could also make it easier to maintain the subject class principle.

Recruitment and induction in enterprises - An interesting subject for vocational education and training research?
Marthe Geiben, Philipp Grollmann
Current European policy processes in the area of vocational education and training - such as the Bologna Process in the higher education field, the Lisbon Strategy, the joint work programme of the education ministers and the Copenhagen Process for vocational education and training have fuelled demand throughout the EU for comparative data and information on VET . The Lisbon Strategy has also boosted interest in comparisons with other regions such as North America and Asia.

DEQA-VET kick-off symposium
On the path to a national strategy for implementing the European Quality Assurance Reference Framework for Vocational Education and Training.
From ENQA-VET to EQAVET With the EQARF, the European Union has given the Member States a "toolbox" with ten indicators and a systematic quality assurance process. These indicators were designed to make it possible to provide information on the status of quality assurance in vocational education and training in EU Member States. The practicability of the EQARF indicators is to be tested in the Member States. If necessary, the indicators are to be modified by the year 2013. The implementation of the European reference framework is being supported by the European Quality Assurance in Vocational Education and Training (EQAVET) network whose members include representatives of the EU Member States, the National Reference Points for Quality Assurance and the European social partners.
Establishment of a network for quality assurance in vocational education and training The aim of the symposium is to inform participants on the current status of the use of quality assurance methods in Germany and to discuss the added value connected with the use of the European reference framework. At the same time, the symposium will foster the communication process of all VET stakeholders and, in doing so, make a contribution toward establishing and strengthening confidence between stakeholders and between Member States. The one-day symposium is set up for a maximum of 100 participants. It is being organised by the German Reference Point for Quality Assurance (DEQA-VET) in cooperation with the Education for Europe # National Agency at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (working language: German).

Knowledge Management - Developments, Prospects, Practical Applications
Conference to be held by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training on 23 November 2010 Increasing internationalisation, knowledge-intensive products and services, and the growing need to prepare and edit ever-greater amounts of information quickly and correctly in ever-shorter periods of time are just a few of the current trends which pose new challenges for today's information and knowledge society. One approach to mastering these challenges is knowledge management which ensures the efficient and systematic use of the resource 'knowledge'.
The conference will focus on current trends and issues in the field of knowledge management. Discussion will revolve around issues involving internal knowledge engineering and knowledge transfer in organisations and enterprises and around questions of how the availability, processing and usability of knowledge can be improved in external communication activities. This spectrum covers not only the knowledge management instruments which support work and communication processes but also new approaches to collaboration, networking and information processing. These will be discussed with the help of practical examples. The outlooks for approaches currently used in the knowledge management field and future trends will be pointed out.
