What role do school grades and recruitment tests play?

When selecting applicants for training places, enterprises have different means for getting an idea of whether the individual candidate is suitable for the targeted vocational training. Most base their assessments on the grades listed on half-yearly certificates or leaving certificates from secondary school. This information is often supplemented by recruitment tests that are conducted to identify whether the individual has specific skills and competences that are relevant to the occupation to be learned. But can reliable conclusions regarding an applicant's later performance during vocational training be drawn from this information?

The quality of initial vocational education and training (IVET) stands and falls by the work of the training staff, their level of qualification, and their commitment to training the next generation of skilled employees. Around 700,000 trainers are registered with the competent bodies which oversee dual-system vocational training in Germany, and this figure is further swelled by vocational school teachers and by trainers and coaches in continuing vocational education and training (CVET). It is by no means unrealistic to estimate that Germany has 1.5 million individuals in total working full-time or part-time in IVET and CVET.

Montenegro: Regional Partner Meeting of vocational education and training institutes
The Second Regional Partner Meeting involving representatives of VET institutions from Serbia, Rumania, Austria, Germany and Montenegro took place in Podgorica, Montenegro on 21 and 22 November 2011. The workshop was jointly staged by the Montenegrin Centre for Vocational Training and BIBB and marks the continuation of a successful series of Partner Meetings, the aim of which is to exchange information and learn from one another. The main focus of discussion over the two days of the event was "Modularisation and credit rating of VET curricula".

BIBB signs cooperation agreement with Chile

A VET cooperation agreement was concluded between the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) and the Chilean government in Berlin on 17 November 2011. BIBB's partner on the Chilean side is the country's Ministry of Education (Ministerio de Educación Nacional). The main thematic fields of interest within the context of German-Chilean cooperation are mining and mining technology and technology. For this reason, the Chilean Ministry of Labour and Mining will also have an important part to play within the scope of cooperation in the area of vocational education and training.

National Education and Vocational Training Forum 2011: successful German dual VET model meets with great interest in Columbia

State President Dr. Juan Manuel Santos and his Minister of Education Dr. Maria Campo were in attendance at the National Education and Vocational Training Forum. The motto of the event, which involved 14 parallel forums and roundtable discussion groups, was "Education with quality: the route to prosperity". The forums and discussions addressed current issues and challenges faced by higher education, vocational education and training and school education from both a national and international perspective.

China benefits from Germany's experience with quality assurance in vocational training

China's Central Institute for Vocational and Technical Education (CIVTE) and BIBB conducted a workshop for VET experts in Peking on 18 and 19 October 2011. This was the first joint expert-level workshop between the two institutes since the signing of a cooperation agreement in May 2001.
The workshop revolved around the issue of Quality Assurance in Initial and Continuing Vocational Training.
