Training profiles - Basic information on individual training occupations. The following are short descriptions of a selection of the hitherto training occupations. This page will be gradually extended.

Designation of occupation

Beautician
Recognized by ordinance of 9. January 2002 ( BGBl. I, p. 417)

Duration of traineeship

3 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).
Structure of the regulated occupation: Training includes elective qualification modules

Field of activity

Beauticians work primarily as employees or self-employed in beauty salons as well as in perfumeries, hairdressers and health service facilities such as spas and rehabilitation clinics, specialized hospitals and so-called "wellness facilities".

Occupational skills

Beauticians

  • have manual skills and, through direct physical contact with their customers, a marked ability for careful and sensitive contact with people,

  • advise and attend to customers in the purchase of cosmetic goods and articles as well as in the supply and after-care of cosmetic services, taking into account the in-house offer and customer typology,

  • assess  the condition of skin and nails and clean, care for and protect them, using the usual professional resources, devices and instruments as well as supporting applications, giving special attention to hygiene and health protection,

  • plan and design decorative cosmetic measures for the entire body, taking into consideration the customer type and current trends,

  • offer, in connection with cosmetic applications, nutritional advice and make individual suggestions for health promotion.

  • In addition to being familiar with the general foundations of cosmetics,

beauticians have acquired specific knowledge, abilities and skills for complementary cosmetic applications, depending on the specialist area of the firm providing training, for example:

  • they have been trained in permanent cosmetics, in particular permanent hair removal and permanent make-up,

  • they plan and carry out supporting hydrotherapeutic applications for cosmetic treatment,

  • they have been trained in special foot care in the cosmetic applications area,

  • they design finger and toe nails and have been trained in make-up techniques,

  • they plan and give cosmetic massages, including manual cosmetic lymph drainage.
