Duration of traineeship

 3 years
 The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Painters and varnishers work in new buildings and in renovation, modernization, restoration and in the preservation of historical monuments at different building sites, for example in the private or public sector, in house building or in commercial, industrial or plant building.

Occupational skills

Painters and varnishers carry out their work independently and in a customer-oriented manner on the basis of work orders, plans and designs, both alone and as part of a team. They coordinate their work with other crafts and trades. They plan their work, set up workplaces, determine the work steps, necessary material and components, and take measures for safety and health protection on the job as well as environmental protection in the workplace. The talk with customers, check their work for errors, document their work, carry out quality assurance measures and deliver the work to the customer. They record time and material expenditure and calculate the services provided.

 In the Design and maintenance speciality

  • check and evaluate undersurfaces and prepare them for coating,
  • carry out protective measures for surfaces which are not to be processed and on objects,
  • treat, coat, cover and design surfaces,
  • maintain and restore surfaces,
  • carry out interior finishing and installation work,
  • carry out plasterwork, insulation and dry wall work,
  • carry out measurements and document the results,
  • select, set up, operate and maintain implements, tools, machines and equipment for the job,
  • assemble and disassemble scaffolding, operate vertical lift working platforms, set up and maintain hoists and conveyors,
  • process materials and components,
  • apply ceiling, wall and floor coverings,
  • carry out energy-saving measures,
  • draw up and realize plans for room and facade design,
  • produce lettering and signs,
  • carry out wood and building protection measures.
     

 In the Church painting and preservation of historical monuments speciality

  • check and evaluate undersurfaces and prepare them for coating,
  • carry out protective measures for surfaces which are not to be processed and on objects,
  • treat, coat, cover and design surfaces,
  • maintain and restore surfaces,
  • carry out interior finishing and installation work,
  • carry out plasterwork, insulation and dry wall work,
  • carry out measurements and document the results,
  • select, set up, operate and maintain implements, tools, machines and equipment for the job,
  • process materials and components
  • assemble and disassemble scaffolding, operate vertical lift working platforms, set up and maintain hoists and conveyors,
  • produce coating and other materials according to historical recipes,
  • practice historical and creative work techniques,
  • carry out restoration measures within the framework of the preservation of historical monuments,
  • carry out reconstruction work and produce reproductions.
     

 In the Building and corrosion protection speciality

  •  check and evaluate undersurfaces and prepare them for coating,
  • carry out protective measures for surfaces which are not to be processed and on objects,
  • treat, coat, cover and design surfaces,
  • maintain and restore surfaces,
  • carry out interior finishing and installation work,
  • carry out plasterwork, insulation and dry wall work,
  • carry out measurements and document the results,
  • select, set up, operate and maintain implements, tools, machines and equipment for the job,
  • assemble and disassemble scaffolding, operate vertical lift working platforms, set up and maintain hoists and conveyors,
  • set up, operate and maintain blasting plant,
  • construct housings and casings,
  • maintain buildings and plant and carry out repair work,
  • carry out corrosion protection measures,
  • carry out concrete protection measures,
  • carry out fire protection and insulation measures,
  • carry out safety designation and street marking.
