Duration of traineeship

3 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule) in one of the following specialist areas:
- Stonemasonry
- Stone sculpture

Field of activity

Stonemasons and sculptors design, make, install and restore structural components, facings, floor coverings, stairs, facades and historical monuments made of natural stone and other materials. They work in workshops and carry out their work inside and outside buildings and other objects.

Occupational skills

Stonemasons and sculptors carry out their work independently and in a customer-oriented manner on the basis of technical documents and work orders, both alone and as part of a team and in cooperation with other trades. They plan and coordinate their work, set up workplaces, erect scaffolding and take measures to ensure safety and health protection at work as well as environmental protection. They check their work for faults, document their work, carry out quality assurance measures and calculate the amount of work performed. In connection with the following activities, stonemasons and sculptors operate and maintain devices, machines and equipment.   Stonemasons and sculptors:  

•  prepare and apply technical documents,
• take measurements and document the results,
• use and maintain tools, equipment, machines and technical facilities,
• work on and process metals, plastics and auxiliary materials,
• make structural components from natural and artificial stone,
• lay slabs and tiles,
• install components,
• work on natural and artificial stone and slabs,
• make components from mineral and plastic-bonded materials,
• make profiles,
• produce inserted areas and inlay work,
• make letters and symbols,

• lay floor coverings and install stairs,
• install components and assemble facades,
• design, make and install monuments,
• maintain, repair and restore structures and monuments;

in the stone sculptor specialisation:

• design and make forms and models,
• design and produce script, reliefs and sculptures,
• repair and restore sculptural works.
