Duration of traineeship

3,5 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Milling machine operators work in industrial enterprises and small firms in which structural parts are produced using milling techniques. Typical areas of operation are lathe systems, milling machine systems, automatic lathe systems and grinding machine systems for individual items or series production.

Occupational skills

Milling machine operators

  • evaluate and analyse production orders in terms of technical feasibility and select information sources and technical documentation to carry out the production work,

  • select production systems appropriate to the order,

  • plan production processes, create and optimise programmes for numerically controlled production systems and install them,

  • use datasheets, descriptions, instruction manuals and other information commonly used in the profession, also in English,

  • set up the workstation and organise working procedures, taking into account the specifications regarding time limits and cost efficiency,

  • make structural parts according to quality specifications using machining techniques, and monitor the production process,

  • apply quality management systems, document and evaluate work and test results and use them to develop measures to optimise production processes and the final product,

  • monitor and check safety devices and maintain and inspect production systems,

  • work as part of a team, provide an introduction to operating the production systems, coordinate their activities with other areas in the process chain and comply with customer requirements.
