Training profiles - Basic information on individual training occupations. The following are short descriptions of a selection of the hitherto training occupations. This page will be gradually extended.

The venues for training are company and vocational school (Berufsschule)

Field of activity

Well builders work both on new constructions and on overhaul and rehabilitation projects at various sites, for example on housing developments, public-sector construction projects, and industrial building sites. They make boreholes and wells and build water transportation and treatment plants.

Occupational skills

Well builders carry out their work on the basis of technical documents and job orders, both independently and in cooperation with others. They plan and coordinate their work, consult and coordinate with others working on the site, set up construction sites and take the measures required for smooth-running operations, for health and safety at work and to protect the environment at the job site. They check their work to ensure error-free execution, document their work, carry out quality assurance measures, calculate job performance data and hand the vacated job site on.

When carrying out the following activities, well builders use plant and machinery, they erect and dismantle scaffolding for work, protection and support purposes and measure constructions and elements thereof for proper fit.

Well builders 

  • carry out excavation work, line construction pits and trenches, fill in and compress earth and build embankments,
  • carry out groundwater lowering work,
  • investigate the site ground, take soil samples, examine and label these and keep soil course records,
  • bore holes, for example for examining the ground at the site, for extracting and infeeding water and for lowering the groundwater,
  • use drilling equipment and apply different drilling techniques,
  • develop boreholes into wells,
  • lay pipelines and attach the corresponding fittings,
  • fit prefabricated units used in well construction and pipeline installation,
  • build bulkheads for ground water measuring systems,
  • carry out vertical and horizontal drillings,
  • carry out pumping tests,
  • install water transportation and treatment plants,
  • detect shortfalls in well performance, identify the reasons and document the occurrence,
  • carry out rehabilitation and regeneration measures on wells,
  • maintain plant, equipment and machinery and in particular repair pumping and transportation systems.


Additionally, well builders carry out related tasks in the field of building construction.
