Duration of traineeship

3 years

The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule)

Field of activity

Skilled transport employees work in public passenger transport undertakings. Their jobs include the driving of buses, trams and/or underground trains, customer service and marketing, planning and operational arrangements as well as the use and deployment of vehicles.

Occupational skills

Skilled transport employees carry out their work independently within the framework of company rules and relevant laws and regulations; they plan and co-ordinate their work and cooperate with their colleagues both in and outside the undertaking. They seek to raise the levels of customer satisfaction and the attractiveness of public passenger transport services and to increase the competitiveness of the undertaking; in a situation of potential conflict they seek to avoid and defuse tension.

Skilled transport employees

  • drive buses, trams and/or underground trains on the undertaking's network and have regard for safety, customer satisfaction, the importance of environmental factors and economic viability,
  • advise customers on fares and service connections as well as special offers and give information on services offered together with other providers,
  • give information in a foreign language,
  • sell the company's tickets and services, maintain the relevant accounts and are involved in calculations,
  • identify customer requirements and are involved in the customer orientated development of the undertaking's products, as well as in quality control,
  • keep customers informed at times when traffic is operating normally and also when disrupted or delayed,
  • take the necessary measures in cases where danger threatens and when an accident has occurred,
  • contribute to the planning and management of vehicles, personnel and finance,
  • are concerned with the servicing and provision of vehicles and with checking roadworthiness and operational safety,
  • arrange for the maintenance and overhaul of the vehicles.
