Duration of traineeship

3 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Pest controllers work in the fields of health and stored goods protection, wood and building protection and plant protection at alternating locations in internal and external areas for public, commercial and private customers.

Occupational skills

Pest controllers protect humans, animals, plants, stored goods, materials, buildings and the environment against the negative impact caused by pests using preventive and, if necessary, control measures. As service providers, they work in a customer-oriented manner, observing legal regulations, technical and organisational standards, written rules and specific working and operating instructions.

Pest controllers

  • plan and implement measures for the preventive defence against and control of pests,
  • evaluate potential risks to the environment and initiate preventive and defensive measures against pests,
  • check and monitor object-specific building control measures,
  • implement control measures and biotechnical monitoring in interior and exterior areas and initiate measures in cases where an infestation by pests has been detected,
  • identify the type and risk potential of pests,
  • select the most suitable pest control agent, taking into account the local and material conditions, and use it in an environmentally sensitive way,
  • provide information about the type, scale, cause and effect of the pest infestation, and about the type, scale and duration of the control measures, the effects of the control agents and safety and preventive measures,
  • document the measures implemented,
  • usually work independently, but can also operate within a team and in cooperation with other trades,
  • operate, service and maintain pest control devices, check their functionality and safety and arrange for repair work to be carried out.
