Duration of traineeship

3 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Shoemakers produce made-to-measure shoes in craft enterprises, make customized inserts and footbeds for ready-to-wear shoes and repair shoes of all kinds.

Shoemakers primarily use the natural material leather, but they also make use of synthetic materials.

Shoemakers carry out their work independently, advise customers individually and check their own results.

Occupational skills

Shoemakers

  • have knowledge of the anatomy of the locomotor system,
  • support and advise customers,
  • plan and prepare their work processes,
  • process tasks with the aid of information and communications systems,
  • also carry out their work as part of a team,
  • prepare foot outline drawings and footstep prints, and make customized inserts and footbeds for ready-to-wear shoes,
  • select leather and other materials and ancillary materials in accordance with their use and economic efficiency,
  • draw up technical documents and determine work processes,
  • cut uppers and bottoms to size,
  • prepare uppers, in particular by cutting, skiving and folding,
  • stitch uppers and linings together,
  • prepare uppers and bottoms,
  • join uppers and bottoms to made-to-measure shoes,
  • assess quality and take quality assurance measures.
