Duration of traineeship

2 years

One third of the training time is devoted to one of three specialist areas:

• masonry work
• concrete and reinforced concrete work or
• furnace and chimney work.

 
The venues for training are company and vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Building construction workers work both on new constructions and on refurbishment, modernization and rehabilitation projects at various job sites, for example on housing developments, public-sector construction projects, and industrial building sites. They build constructions using blocks and elements made of concrete and reinforced concrete.

Occupational skills

Building construction workers carry out their work on the basis of technical documents and job orders, both independently and in cooperation with others. They plan and coordinate their work, set up construction sites, determine the individual work steps required and take the measures required for health and safety at work and to protect the environment at the job site. They check their work to ensure error-free execution, document their work and clear their work site.

When carrying out the following activities, building construction workers use plant and machinery, they erect and dismantle scaffolding for work, protection and support purposes and measure constructions and elements thereof for proper fit.

Building construction workers specializing in masonry work 

• build single-leaf and multiple-leaf walls using various types of block and slab and different bonding techniques,
• cover openings in masonry using synthetic blocks and pre-fabricated elements,
• build masonry facings using various bonding techniques,
• seal block constructions against moisture,
• build, erect, brace and anchor formwork for foundations, right-angle supports and beams, and flat-run walls and ceilings,
• build and install reinforcing members,
• deliver, feed and compress concrete and treat the surface manually and mechanically,
• apply materials to insulate against heat, cold, noise and fire,
• mount plastering, screed and construction elements using dry construction techniques.

Building construction workers specializing in concrete and reinforced concrete work

• build, erect, brace and anchor formwork for foundations, right-angle supports and beams, and flat-run walls and ceilings,
• build formwork for conical shapes, column heads, landings and straight stair flights,
• build formwork for fair-faced concrete,
• build and install reinforcing members and prepare reinforcement parts,
• test green and hardened concrete,
• deliver, feed and compress concrete and treat the surface manually and mechanically,
• post-treat concrete,
• build, store, transport and install compound units made of reinforced concrete,
• seal concrete and reinforced concrete structures against moisture,
• build interior and exterior walls using various types of block and slab and different bonding techniques,
• apply materials to insulate against heat, cold, noise and fire.
  

Building construction workers specializing in furnace and chimney work

build masonry structures using small and medium-sized blocks,

• build single-layer and multiple-layer masonry structures for furnaces and exit gas ducts,
• build masonry chimneys,
• build linings for chimneys with thermal insulation,
• relocate prefabricated exit gas installations and ducts,
• seal masonry constructions against humidity,
• build, erect, brace and anchor formwork for foundations, right-angle supports and beams, and flat-run walls and ceilings,
• build and install reinforcing members,
• deliver, feed and compress concrete and treat the surface manually and mechanically,
• apply materials to insulate against heat, cold, noise and fire.

Additionally, building construction workers carry out related tasks in the fields of construction finishing and civil engineering.
