Duration of traineeship

3 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Paper technicians work in the pulp and paper industry, particularly in pulp, paper and board mills.

Occupational skills

Paper technicians

  • produce pulp, paper and  board
  • plan production sequences taking account of applications and production
    processes, both independently and as part of a team
  • select product-specific materials and production methods
  • operate production facilities for the manufacture of pulp, paper and board
  • monitor and optimize the production process in accordance with quality standards and specifications using control equipment
  • carry out tests and measurements as part of their quality control and maintenance work
  • acquire, transfer and convert data and make job-specific use of hardware and software
  • carry out maintenance work during the ongoing production process and during maintenance shutdowns
  • work in a customer-oriented way taking into account both economic and ecological aspects.

Paper technicians specializing in the production of paper and board

  • operate and monitor machines and facilities for the production of paper and board

  • produce and convert e. g. graphic papers, technical papers, special papers, packaging papers, board and hygiene papers.


Paper technicians specializing in the production of pulp

  • operate and  monitor machines and facilities for the production of pulp
  • produce pulp and process reusable materials as part of an economical and environmentally-friendly process.
