Training profiles - Basic information on individual training occupations. The following are short descriptions of a selection of the hitherto training occupations. This page will be gradually extended.

Make-up artist

Recognized by ordinance of 8 February 2002 ( BGBl. I, p. 606)

Duration of traineeship

3 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule)

Field of activity

Make-up artists work independently according to conceptual instructions, for example for theatre, film, television, photo and show productions.

Occupational skills

Make-up artists do primarily artistic work. They

  • develop creative plans for doing make-up,
  • plan, calculate and organise their work,
  • design the components necessary for the make-up and produce these, in particular wigs, hairpieces, beards, plastic parts and masks,
  • do make-up using masks, hair, make-up, bald heads and plastic materials,
  • create character types, historical and contemporary personalities - also taking into account ethnological characteristics - as well as fantasy and animal characters,
  • design and realise special effects such as skin changes, action injuries and deformations,
  • make sketches and graphic designs.
