Duration of traineeship

3 years
One third of the training time is devoted to one of four branches:

  • media consultancy
  • media design
  • media operation
  • media technology

 The venues for training are company and vocational school (Berufsschule)

Field of activity

Designers of digital and print media work in companies engaged in information processing and the production of communication products, for example in

  • advertizing and multimedia agencies and studios,
  • media consultancy companies,
  • companies producing on-line and off-line media,
  • publishing houses,
  • companies engaged in pre-press, pre-production and data technology,
  • printing companies (offset, gravure or digital printing),
  • companies engaged in reprography or microreprography,
  • companies engaged in producing copy for photogravure printing.

Their area of work covers advising clients on products, designing and preparing data and processing these technically to create media products.

Occupational skills

Designers of digital and print media specializing in media consultancy

  • carry out project planning for media projects both individually and in teams;
  • attend to the needs of and advise clients;
  • carry out sub-elements of project management, e.g. personnel and material planning, planning and monitoring of budgets and deadlines;
  • visualize and present projects;
  • carry out project-related data processing activities.

Designers of digital and print media specializing in media design

  • develop design concepts both individually and in teams;
  • by using computer software to help design text, images and graphics for print products;
  • by using computer software to help design text, images, graphics, moving pictures and sound for multimedia products or for use in digital media;
  • advise clients on desiging media products taking account of technical, production and commercial considerations;
  • develop and design press products in compliance with editorial and technical instructions;
  • develop design concepts on the basis of client specifications, taking account of technical and commercial considerations;
  • integrate different types of file to produce media products and prepare these for output in different media.

 Designers of digital and print media specializing in media operation

  • plan production processes both individually and in teams;
  • import, transfer and convert files for multiple usages;
  • taking account of technical considerations, combine text, image, graphics, moving pictures and audio data for multimedia products and output these on different data media and in different media;
  • advise clients on media-neutral design of data for multiple usages.

 Designers of digital and print media specializing in media technology

  • plan production processes both individually and in teams;
  • use communications systems to import and enter various data;
  • prepare data and combine them for different output media;
  • handle data output operations in various media products, in particular in reprography, microreprography and digital printing;
  • produce consumer products individually and in series;
  • control, optimize and document the production process.
