Field of activity

Road maintenance workers work for the highway departments and road construction offices of the Länder, administrative districts and local government bodies as well as in private building firms in trade and industry.

Road maintenance workers carry out their work in various locations, principally on public roads and ancillary road facilities. They work in accordance with the relevant regulations and safety regulations, particularly traffic regulations, both independently and as part of a team. They carry out work in the areas of construction maintenance and repair, green area upkeep, road equipping, road cleaning, winter road clearance and traffic safety, and take customer interests into consideration.

  • plan work processes, monitor and assess results and apply quality assurance and business management measures
  • set up, secure and clear their workplaces
  • draw up and apply technical documents and carry out measurements
  • operate and maintain tools, equipment, machinery and technical facilities
  • drive class CE vehicles and vehicle combinations on public roads
  • secure accident sites by erecting the necessary signs, signals and barriers, apply first aid measures,
  • report accidents and clear accident sites
  • select, test and store building materials, work and process material and carry out building and
  • maintenance work on structures in masonry and reinforced concrete
  • carry out and coordinate civil engineering building and maintenance work on roads and ancillary road facilities
  • lay out and care for green areas, plant and care for woods, inspect and fell trees
  • carry out winter road clearance, select and apply grit using class CE vehicles
  • carry out route maintenance tasks
  • install and maintain road signs and traffic signals and equipment
  • actuate measures on road safety and telematics systems
  • know how to handle modern information and communications technologies
