Training profiles - Basic information on individual training occupations. The following are short descriptions of a selection of the hitherto training occupations. This page will be gradually extended.

Please select the initial letter of the profession wanted to receive the corresponding profile.

Designation of occupation

Microtechnologist (m/f)
Recognized by ordinance of 6. March 1998 (BGBl. I, p 477)

Duration of traineeship

3 years
One third of the training time is devoted to one of two specialist areas:

  • semiconductor technology
  • microsystems technology

The venues for training are company and vocational school (Berufsschule)

Field of activity

Microtechnologists produce microtechnology products in a manufacturing environment with emphasis on logistics, process technology, quality management, correct disposal and technical support. They work in manufacturing and the associated infrastructure facilities, and in the R&D divisions of companies and research institutions.

In the field of "semiconductor technology" they produce semiconductor products using lamination, overlaying, etching, and doping techniques and assemble and test such products. Typical products include discrete semiconductors, power semiconductors, integrated semiconductors, ASICS, opto-semiconductors and optoelectronic display systems.

The field "microsystems technology" mainly entails producing supports for components using coating techniques and producing microsystems using placement, soldering, bonding, sealing and testing techniques. Typical areas of activity include the manufacture of circuit supports using thick film, thin film, hybrid, and SMD technologies and the manufacture of components using deep lithographic etching or electroplating and moulding.

Occupational skills

Microtechnologists

  • plan, organize and document work sequences and carry out quality management measures;/li>
  • set up plant for the manufacture of microtechnology products, set the process parameters and ensure that the plant is operational;
  • safeguard and check clean room conditions;
  • operate, load and monitor manufacturing and assembly installations;
  • carry out interim and final tests and optimize process parameters on the basis of the results of interim tests;
  • recognize disruptions in the process and take measures to safeguard operation;
  • handle materials in compliance with regulations on health and safety at work and environmental protection, store the necessary materials / chemical substances and make these available for the production process;
  • service the installations for treating process chemicals and ensure proper disposal of chemical waste;
  • check installations for manufacturing microtechnology products, recognize faults and carry out preventive maintenance measures;
  • identify improvement potentials in terms of output, quality, throughput times and economic efficiency, implement improvements using problem-solving techniques, and optimize production processes.
