Designation of occupation

Civil engineering worker (m/f) *

Recognized by ordinance of June 2., 1999 (BGBl. I p. 1102)

Duration of traineeship

2 years

One third of the training time is devoted to one of five specialist areas:

  • road building work,
  • pipeline installation work,
  • duct construction work,
  • well construction and special civil engineering work,
  • rail track construction work.

The venues for training are company and vocational school (Berufsschule)

Field of activity

Civil engineering workers work both on new constructions and on repair and rehabilitation projects at various job sites. They carry out earth-moving works, build construction pits, trenches and transport routes and areas, and install supply and disposal systems.

Occupational skills

Civil engineering workers carry out their work on the basis of technical documents and job orders, both independently and in cooperation with others. They plan and coordinate their work, set up construction sites, determine the individual work steps required and take the measures required for health and safety at work and to protect the environment at the job site. They check their work to ensure error-free execution, document their work and clear their work site.

When carrying out the following activities, civil engineering workers use plant and machinery, they erect and dismantle scaffolding for work, protection and support purposes and measure constructions and elements thereof for proper fit.

Civil engineering workers specializing in road building

  • carry out excavation work, line construction pits and trenches, fill in and compress earth and build embankments,
  • carry out open water-lowering work for surface water, soil course water and groundwater,
  • build the foundations for floors and coverings and fit load-bearing structures,
  • lay sett paving and slab paving made of synthetic and natural stone,
  • lay asphalt coverings,
  • build special construction elements using blocks, prefabricated parts and concrete, for example manholes, surrounds and infillings.

Civil engineering workers specializing in pipeline installation work

  • carry out excavation work, line construction pits and trenches, fill in and compress earth, and build embankments,
  • carry out open water-lowering work for soil course water and groundwater,
  • process pressure pipes made of metallic and synthetic materials,
  • install pressure pipelines and also accessories and fittings made of different materials for thetransportation of liquid and gaseous media,
  • build cable ducts and lay cables and cable pipes,
  • build manhole constructions using prefabricated parts, concrete and masonry,
  • carry out related tasks to restore the road surface.

Civil engineering workers specializing in duct construction work

  • carry out excavation work, line construction pits and trenches, fill in and compress earth, and build embankments,
  • carry out open water-lowering work for soil course water and groundwater,
  • install discharge pipes as open conduits,
  • build cable ducts and lay cables and cable pipes,
  • build manhole constructions using prefabricated parts, reinforced concrete and masonry,
  • carry out related tasks to restore the road surface.
