Designation of occupation

Process mechanic (m/f) in the non-metallic minerals industry

Duration of traineeship

3 years

The venues for training delivery are the training company and the vocational school.
Training is provided in one of six specialisms:

  • construction materials
  • ready-mixed concrete
  • gypsum board or fibre cement
  • sand-lime brick or aerated concrete
  • prefabricated concrete products
  • asphalt technics

Field of activity

Process mechanics (m/f) in the non-metallic minerals industry are mainly employed in monitoring, operating and controlling the corresponding production plant, carrying out quality assurance measures and maintaining the operating equipment.

Occupational skills

Process mechanics (m/f) in the non-metallic minerals industry specializing in construction materials

  • operate and monitor quarrying plant and conveying devices in quarries;
  • take material samples or monitor automated sampling devices and dispatch the samples to the materials laboratory;
  • monitor and control calcination systems and grinding plant for manufacturing hydraulic binding agents (cement, lime, dolomite, gypsum);
  • evaluate measurement data and, acting on such data and analytical findings, intervene in the production process to correct anomalies;
  • carry out cleaning and servicing operations during inspection tours;
  • carry out maintenance operations as necessary or report error messages to the maintenance department;
  • operate bagging and palletizing equipment for sack goods and weighing and loading equipment for filling bulk goods into container vehicles.

Process mechanics (m/f) in the non-metallic minerals industry specializing in ready-mixed concrete

  • organize, as required, the supply of basic materials: cement/lime, sand, gravel, additives, reagents and water;
  • initiate and monitor, with reference to the mixing instructions, the weighing of the solid components, the loading of the mixer, the addition of water and reagents and the mxing process;
  • monitor the loading of the mixing vehicles with wet concrete or wet mortar and the computerized production of delivery documents;
  • carry out checks on concrete in accordance with technical standards within the framework of their monitoring activities;
  • regularly check the conveying, weighing and mixing equipment and replace worn parts as required;
  • commission recycling plant for residual concrete and mortar and carry out servicing operations.

Process mechanics (m/f) in the non-metallic minerals industry specializing in gypsum board or fibre cement

  • monitor the weighing of solid substances, the addition of water and the mixing process for producing gypsum board or fibre cement pastes;
  • monitor the corresponding shaping process: boards (gypsum boards) or boards and pipes (fibre cement);
  • monitor the hardening times and the automated board cutting operations;
  • monitor the throughput through the drying plant;
  • set up trimming and aftertreatment machines;
  • carry out cleaning and servicing operations during inspection tours;
  • carry out quality checks, document measurements, and record the production parameters using computerized systems;
  • attend to stacking and transportation to the dispatch station.

Process mechanics (m/f) in the non-metallic minerals industry specializing in sand-lime brick and aerated concrete

  • monitor the weighing of solid substances, the addition of water and the mixing process for producing sand-lime brick and aerated concrete pastes;
  • operate and service plant and machinery for producing reinforcing elements, including the application of protection against corrosion;
  • for shaping aerated concrete products:
  • monitor where appropriate the correct positioning of reinforcing elements in the moulds;
  • monitor the filling, hardening and blowing processes;
  • monitor the cutting of boards and sections;
  • check and label the cut articles;
  • alternatively, for shaping sand-lime bricks:
  • monitor the moulding process for producing sand-lime bricks;
  • check and label the products;
  • operate and monitor the autoclaves for steam-hardening (only after additional training as a boilerman;
  • set up and monitor aftertreatment machines and cement and otherwise assemble aerated concrete parts to form large-format structures;
  • carry out cleaning and servicing operations during inspection tours;
  • join sand-lime bricks, where appropriate, to reinforcing elements using mortar to form reinforced sand-lime brick structures;
  • carry out the final inspection, grade, store and pallet/pack the products.

Process mechanics (m/f) in the non-metallic minerals industry specializing in prefabricated concrete products

  • monitor and control the mixing of cement, sand, gravel, additives, reagents and water for the production of concrete paste;
  • manufacture reinforcing elements from concrete steel and, where appropriate, position these correctly in the moulds;
  • monitor and control the mechanical shaping and compaction of freshly-mixed concrete into prefabricated concrete products;
  • check the quality by visual inspection of the green products and testing for dimensional accuracy and strength;
  • carry out cleaning and servicing operations during inspection tours;
  • label the products as required and prepare them ready for dispatch;
  • transport, store and load the prefabricated concrete products, e.g. pipes, shaped bricks, masonry bricks, sheeting, and building block modules.
